‍

‍Parking in Ribeira Brava

The centrally located Ribeira Brava parking garage is a convenient place to park while you explore the town before starting your drive.

Parking in Ponta do Sol

Parking can be a little tricky. Try looking for a marked space near the tunnel by the village centre, and allow a little extra time to find a spot.

Parking in Paul do Mar

Look for parking beside the old cemetery, and check the signs before leaving your car.

You’ve reached the final stop — and what a place to finish!

Your tour ends at Estalagem da Ponta do Sol, one of the town’s best-known hotels, with a restaurant overlooking the Atlantic. Treat yourself to a delicious meal, settle in with a drink and, if the weather plays along, enjoy a beautiful sunset to round off your western Madeira adventure.

Viewpoint of São Sebastião
Forget Netflix—Miradouro de São Sebastião serves blockbuster scenery live, with surround sound waves and banana-plantation plot twists. Rated: 10/10 for jaw drops.

High above Ribeira Brava, Miradouro de São Sebastião is the kind of place that makes your brain go “wow” and your camera scream “again!”. From here, you get it all: rooftops that look like Lego bricks, cliffs carved by drama itself, endless ocean, and even a casual palm tree standing like it owns the place.

It’s peaceful. It’s powerful. It’s Madeira showing off—and honestly, we’re not mad about it. Great spot for photos, picnics, or just staring into the blue like a telenovela character lost in thought.

If you’re heading up, don’t rush. Take your time, enjoy the ride, and give this view the slow clap it deserves.

The Legendary Church of São Bento – Ribeira Brava’s Crown Jewel

Right in the beating heart of Ribeira Brava stands a church so old and fabulous, it’s basically Madeira’s religious celebrity. We’re talking about the Church of São Bento—a holy hotspot, cultural heavyweight, and an absolute must-see if you're exploring the island’s west side.

This beauty started out in the 15th century as a humble little chapel, but clearly it had glow-up dreams. By the 16th century, it blossomed into a full-blown church and got a few facelifts along the way. Now it’s rocking a stylish mix of Manueline, Mannerist, and Baroque vibes. Basically, it’s the architectural equivalent of a time-traveling influencer.

Inside? Oh, honey—prepare to be dazzled. There’s gold leaf, silver treasures, Renaissance bling, and wooden sculptures so detailed they probably took centuries of staring to carve. One of the stars? A stunning Virgin Mary statue straight from Flanders, dated 1520. Throw in some biblical panels and jaw-dropping chandeliers and you’ve got yourself a holy museum.

Oh, and that bell tower? Covered in blue tiles and crowned with the royal bling of King Manuel I. Because obviously, no fancy church is complete without a little royal sparkle.

Even outside, the church has stories to tell—like the one about the local priest who threw a cross into the stormy sea in the 1940s to save the town. Spoiler alert: it worked!

Whether you're into divine art, epic history, or just need a cool Instagram backdrop, São Bento Church has got your back (and your soul).

In the hills of Calheta, somewhere between the clouds and the coast, there’s a humble little spot that locals whisper about and travellers accidentally fall in love with: Poncha do Lombo Doutor.

Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse
Standing at the Edge of Madeira

The Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse Viewpoint sits on the westernmost tip of the island, high above the Atlantic on dramatic cliffs about 290 metres above sea level. Out here the world suddenly feels very big — and Madeira feels very small behind you.

The star of the show is the historic Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships along Madeira’s rugged coastline since June 1922. The tower itself stands about 14 metres high, but thanks to its cliff-top location the light shines from an impressive 312 metres above sea level.

From the viewpoint you get breathtaking views of the wild western coastline. On clear days you can see the dramatic cliffs stretching north toward Achadas da Cruz in the municipality of Porto Moniz.

Next to the lighthouse you’ll also find a small lighthouse museum, opened in 2001. Inside, visitors can discover historic equipment, photographs and fascinating information about Madeira’s lighthouse network and the life of lighthouse keepers.

But honestly? The real highlight is simply standing here, watching the Atlantic stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

No crowds.
No rush.
Just wind, cliffs and ocean.

Sometimes the best places are the ones at the end of the road.

Rum Factory Calheta
Engenho da Calheta – Where Madeira’s Rum Story Lives 🥃
32.72281778654195
-17.177263987894058

If you want to understand Madeira, you have to understand sugar cane. And if you want to understand sugar cane… you have to visit Engenho da Calheta.

Located right in the heart of Calheta, this historic sugar cane mill is one of the oldest still operating mills on the island and a living reminder of Madeira’s famous sugar era — a time when sugar was known as “white gold.”

The factory was created during Madeira’s second sugar boom, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when the island’s sugar industry experienced a new wave of development.

Today, the mill is famous for producing two iconic Madeiran products:

🥃 Madeira Rum – created through controlled fermentation and careful distillation
🍯 Sugar Cane Honey (Mel de Cana) – a thick, rich syrup made by slowly cooking fresh sugar cane juice, locally called garapa

What makes Engenho da Calheta special is that it still works using traditional machinery. Once a year — usually shortly after Easter — the mill comes alive during the sugar cane harvest, offering visitors a rare chance to see the entire production process in action.

But even outside the harvest season, the visit is worth it.

Inside you’ll find:

  • A tasting room (very important research 🥃)
  • A wine bar
  • Historic machinery and production equipment

In many ways, Engenho da Calheta is not just a factory — it’s a living museum where Madeira’s rum tradition continues.

And yes… a tasting at the end is highly recommended.
