Good To Know

The Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse Viewpoint sits on the westernmost tip of the island, high above the Atlantic on dramatic cliffs about 290 metres above sea level. Out here the world suddenly feels very big — and Madeira feels very small behind you.

The star of the show is the historic Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse, which has been guiding ships along Madeira’s rugged coastline since June 1922. The tower itself stands about 14 metres high, but thanks to its cliff-top location the light shines from an impressive 312 metres above sea level.

From the viewpoint you get breathtaking views of the wild western coastline. On clear days you can see the dramatic cliffs stretching north toward Achadas da Cruz in the municipality of Porto Moniz.

Next to the lighthouse you’ll also find a small lighthouse museum, opened in 2001. Inside, visitors can discover historic equipment, photographs and fascinating information about Madeira’s lighthouse network and the life of lighthouse keepers.

But honestly? The real highlight is simply standing here, watching the Atlantic stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

No crowds.
No rush.
Just wind, cliffs and ocean.

Sometimes the best places are the ones at the end of the road.
