Good To Know
If you want to understand Madeira, you have to understand sugar cane. And if you want to understand sugar cane… you have to visit Engenho da Calheta.
Located right in the heart of Calheta, this historic sugar cane mill is one of the oldest still operating mills on the island and a living reminder of Madeira’s famous sugar era — a time when sugar was known as “white gold.”
The factory was created during Madeira’s second sugar boom, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when the island’s sugar industry experienced a new wave of development.
Today, the mill is famous for producing two iconic Madeiran products:
🥃 Madeira Rum – created through controlled fermentation and careful distillation
🍯 Sugar Cane Honey (Mel de Cana) – a thick, rich syrup made by slowly cooking fresh sugar cane juice, locally called garapa
What makes Engenho da Calheta special is that it still works using traditional machinery. Once a year — usually shortly after Easter — the mill comes alive during the sugar cane harvest, offering visitors a rare chance to see the entire production process in action.
But even outside the harvest season, the visit is worth it.
Inside you’ll find:
- A tasting room (very important research 🥃)
- A wine bar
- Historic machinery and production equipment
In many ways, Engenho da Calheta is not just a factory — it’s a living museum where Madeira’s rum tradition continues.
And yes… a tasting at the end is highly recommended.
