Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket — it can feel cooler in the mountains than down in Funchal. Check opening hours for the church, museum and restaurants before setting off, especially on Sundays.

Allow a little extra time at Eira do Serrado if you’re stopping for chestnut bread. Your current 15-minute estimate covers a quick viewpoint visit; 30–40 minutes would leave more room to enjoy both the view and a bite to eat.

Follow the stops in order and take your time on the winding roads. This is a route for enjoying the scenery, not racing through it. And one last thing: Don't rush! Nun's Valley is far too beautiful to experience through a windscreen at full speed. 💛

Curral das Freiras is one of Madeira’s most unique places—tucked away in a mountain valley that feels like a secret world of its own. But this spot isn’t just about jaw-dropping landscapes; it’s also bursting with history and culture. At the heart of it all stands the Church of Our Lady of Deliverance (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento)—the only historical monument in this valley village.

The church was built in the early 19th century, but before that, locals gathered in a small chapel dating back to the 17th century. With the growing population and the long distance to the parish of Santo António, the people of Curral das Freiras decided they deserved their very own parish. And they got it! On March 17, 1790, Queen Maria I gave the official green light.

Since the old chapel of Santo António was falling apart, a new church was built: the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento. At the beginning of the 20th century, major renovations gave it the beautiful main altar and side altars dedicated to Our Lady of Deliverance and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Today, this church is more than just stone and history—it’s the proud soul of Curral das Freiras.

Chestnut Museum of Nun's Valley

If there’s one place that truly captures the spirit of Curral das Freiras (Nun’s Valley), it’s Sabores do Curral. This restaurant isn’t just about food—it’s a full-on chestnut celebration!

Chestnut soup? Check. Chestnut cream? Of course. Chestnut beer? Absolutely (and it’s a must-try!). Even the décor has chestnut vibes, right down to a chestnut-shaped wall clock. Sabores do Curral takes the valley’s most famous ingredient and turns it into a unique dining experience that blends tradition, creativity, and delicious flavors.

And let’s not forget the view: from the terrace, you’ll be sipping local beer while surrounded by towering mountains that look like guardians of the valley.

So, if you’re looking for authentic Madeiran flavors with a chestnut twist, Sabores do Curral is the place where tradition and taste meet.
