Good To Know
Curral das Freiras is one of Madeira’s most unique places—tucked away in a mountain valley that feels like a secret world of its own. But this spot isn’t just about jaw-dropping landscapes; it’s also bursting with history and culture. At the heart of it all stands the Church of Our Lady of Deliverance (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento)—the only historical monument in this valley village.
The church was built in the early 19th century, but before that, locals gathered in a small chapel dating back to the 17th century. With the growing population and the long distance to the parish of Santo António, the people of Curral das Freiras decided they deserved their very own parish. And they got it! On March 17, 1790, Queen Maria I gave the official green light.
Since the old chapel of Santo António was falling apart, a new church was built: the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento. At the beginning of the 20th century, major renovations gave it the beautiful main altar and side altars dedicated to Our Lady of Deliverance and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Today, this church is more than just stone and history—it’s the proud soul of Curral das Freiras.
