Good To Know
The Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum in Funchal is a true hidden gem of Madeira’s art scene. Dedicated to two remarkable brothers—Henrique Franco, the painter, and Francisco Franco, the sculptor—this museum celebrates the island’s contribution to Portuguese modernism.
Opened in 1987 in a 1940s-era building, the museum houses an impressive collection: oil paintings, drawings, engravings, frescoes, and sculptures spanning the brothers’ careers, from youthful experiments to mature masterpieces.
Francisco Franco rose to fame as one of Portugal’s most requested sculptors of the 1920s, known especially for his official works of the Estado Novo. His brother Henrique, a multi-award-winning painter, left his mark on Portuguese modernism by contributing to the striking Church of Our Lady of Fátima in Lisbon.
Visiting this museum isn’t just about admiring art—it’s about diving into Madeira’s cultural soul. With guided tours, thematic activities, and hands-on workshops, the museum invites everyone to experience creativity up close.
