Empress Sisi in Madeira: A Royal Wellness Retreat with a Side of Adventure

Imagine an Austrian Empress packing her bags and escaping to Madeira—sounds like a 19th-century wellness getaway, right? Well, that’s exactly what Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sisi, did twice!

Her first visit lasted from November 29, 1860, to April 28, 1861. The official reason? A persistent cough. Instead of sipping herbal tea in Vienna, she opted for Madeira’s fresh ocean air. But let’s be honest—who wouldn’t prefer an island retreat over strict court etiquette? 🏃‍♀️💨

She stayed at Quinta Vigia, then called Villa Davies, with a stunning view of Funchal and the harbor. Sadly, the original estate was demolished in 1973 to make way for a casino. Today, the site houses the government headquarters, but visitors can still enjoy the beautiful gardens.

Sisi’s Madeira Adventures: From Basket Weaving to Basket Sledding

During her stay, Sisi wasn’t just relaxing—she was hiking, exploring villages like Camacha (famous for basket weaving), and soaking up the fisherman’s life in Câmara de Lobos. And because even an Empress needs some fun, she reportedly took a ride on the iconic Monte toboggan—a thrill-seeking tradition still alive today! 🎿👑

Second Visit: Christmas, Birthday, and a 5-Star Stay

33 years later, from December 23, 1893, to February 4, 1894, Sisi returned to Madeira. This time, she celebrated her 56th birthday in pure luxury at the famous Reid’s Palace Hotel. 🏨✨ One can only imagine her enjoying tea with a breathtaking ocean view... or secretly planning her next escape.

A Royal Legacy in Madeira

To commemorate her visits, a statue of Sisi now stands in Funchal, near the Pestana Casino Park Hotel—exactly where Quinta Vigia once stood. So if you ever visit Madeira, take a moment to channel your inner Empress. Or at least sit on a bench with a Pastel de Nata and wonder: What would Sisi post on Instagram today?
