Good To Know

Let’s rewind the holy clock. Before the current church stood tall in all its basalt glory, São Gonçalo’s faithful gathered in the humble Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows. Back in the day (way back—Alvará Régio, 1574), it got promoted to parish status, because even heaven knows when it’s time to upgrade.

Fast-forward to the late 1600s and early 1700s: the chapel was cracking at the seams, quite literally. Ceiling about to collapse, bursting at the pews with worshippers—time for a new spiritual HQ! So, they picked a more central spot, rolled up their sleeves, and started building a church that could handle both divine blessings and heavy crowds.

The first stone of the São Gonçalo church you see today was laid on June 7, 1947. But don’t think the money just fell from the skies—locals donated like pros! With offerings, pilgrimages, and even jewelry (move over, crowdfunding), they raised the funds under the guidance of Father Porfírio and then the go-getter priest Father Pita Ferreira, who kicked off the parish house in 1946 and church construction in 1947. Builder-in-chief? Jacinto Fernandes de Gouveia.

Finally, in late 1958, São Gonçalo's sparkly new church was ready for its grand entrance. According to the local paper in January 1959, celebrations for the Saint were held in the brand-new building—thanks to Father Ferreira’s sheer divine hustle.

Let’s not forget: the church is built with solid basalt stone (so Madeiran it hurts), mostly from the Campanário and Pináculo areas. The fancy stonework? Straight from Câmara de Lobos. Shoutout to Mr. Blandy, the local MVP, who donated all the rock needed. Respect.

Inside, it’s elegance meets island pride—pink marble walls up to 1.5m, black marble altar, stone flooring, and gothic-style arches to give it that old-world wow factor.

If churches could win design awards, São Gonçalo would be the Beyoncé of holy buildings.
