Good To Know

Nestled on Rua da Carreira 235, this cemetery's got location envy—it's smack dab in the middle of Funchal's hustle and bustle. From a forgotten corner outside the city walls to a prime spot near the trendiest mall in town, talk about an upgrade! Before 1777, non-Catholics in Madeira had a rather dramatic exit—they were treated to a one-way trip off the cliffs at Ponta da Garajau. Luckily, the Anglican crew said, "Nope!" and snagged themselves a piece of land. Fast forward to 1778, and the British Cemetery was born!

The first to take up residence? Mrs. Shipcote, an innkeeper's better half, in 1772. Soon enough, this place became the cool hangout spot for the Brits, especially during the Napoleonic Wars. But with all the new friends, space got tight, leading to the "New Cemetery" and the "Middle Cemetery." And in 1887, when the city needed room for roads, the old graves got a new address.

This cemetery's like a who's who of history's coolest cats! You've got Cecil Buckley, the naval hero who snagged the first Victoria Cross. And let's not forget Evelyn Everett-Green, the novelist who penned more plots than a daytime soap opera. Sara Forbes Bonetta, Queen V's goddaughter, is here too, alongside Paul Langerhans, whose name sounds like he should've been a famous pastry chef. And of course, we've got William Reid, the hotel mogul who knows a thing or two about resting in style.

World War I and II left their mark here too. You'll find sailors from sunken ships and heroes from the high seas, reminding us that even in death, their stories sail on. So, if you're ready for a walk on the not-so-grave side of history, come join us at the British Cemetery. It's a place where the past isn't just remembered—it's celebrated with a wink and a smile!
