By the time you've finished saying Miradouro Largo Dr. João Maurício Batista Abreu dos Santos, you could have already taken three photos, admired the Atlantic and questioned why nobody simply called it The Viewpoint with the Really Long Name.
Luckily, the view is much easier to appreciate than the name is to remember.
Perched above Madeira's rugged coastline right in the middle of Paul do Mar, this charming little viewpoint offers a front-row seat to the endless Atlantic Ocean. Waves crash against the volcanic rocks below, the coastline stretches into the distance, and on a sunny day, the ocean sparkles like someone accidentally dropped a million diamonds into it.
The viewpoint itself is surprisingly inviting, with traditional Portuguese-style tiles, colourful flowers and shaded seating areas beneath wooden pergolas. It's the perfect place to sit down, enjoy the sea breeze and do absolutely nothing for a few minutes. Sometimes, that's exactly what a holiday needs.
And unlike some viewpoints that require hiking boots, a backpack and a questionable amount of enthusiasm, this one is all about enjoying the scenery without turning it into a fitness challenge.
Why We Like It
🌊 Endless Atlantic Ocean views📸 Fantastic photo opportunities along the rugged coastline🪑 Benches for a relaxing seaside break🌺 Colourful flowers and traditional Portuguese tiles☀️ Wooden pergolas offering a little shade😎 A peaceful spot to sit back and enjoy the ocean🏆 Possibly more words in its name than steps needed to explore it
Good to Know
🌊 The viewpoint sits above a rocky coastline, so swimming isn't what you come here for. Admire the Atlantic from the safety of the terrace.
📸 Bring your camera! The combination of blue ocean, traditional tiles and dramatic coastline makes for some lovely photos.
🪑 Take your time. There are benches where you can sit, relax and enjoy the sound of the waves.
🗣️ Pronunciation challenge: Try saying the full name three times without taking a breath. If you succeed, congratulations! You've earned yourself another five minutes on the bench.
And if someone asks where you've been, just say "that lovely viewpoint by the sea." We won't tell Dr. João Maurício Batista Abreu dos Santos.
