Good To Know
Just a short climb from the Barbecue of Pico Alto lies the Pico Alto Viewpoint (Miradouro do Pico Alto) — perched at 1129 meters above sea level and serving up views that’ll make your jaw drop and your camera battery weep. From here, you’ll gaze straight down over Funchal’s terracotta rooftops, the shimmering Atlantic Ocean, and deep green valleys wrapped in the Laurissilva forest. There’s even a tiled panorama map to point out landmarks, so you can nod knowingly when someone asks, “What’s that mountain over there?”
The walk up is short (only 120 meters from the sign!), but the reward is huge. This is the kind of spot where selfies don’t need captions — just your best “wow” face.
Whether you come after a sizzling barbecue feast or as a morning hike, Miradouro do Pico Alto is where Madeira shows off its best angles. Spoiler alert: every angle is the good side.
