Viewpoint of Achada do Mestre

Okay, Guys this one we found by pure luck. We were cruising along the old road towards Jardim do Mar and found a small path big enough for our Opel Frontera. We decided to follow it and damn we were lucky. The viewpoint is breathtaking and not crowded at all since you only can reach it either by 4x4 or by walking. From the viewpoint, you can see lush valleys, one of the most dramatic cliffs on the island, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean stretching out to the horizon. It's like looking at a real-life postcard! The scenery is so stunning, you might think you've stumbled into a painter's dream.

This spot is perfect for a quick photo op or a leisurely break to soak in the natural beauty. As allready mentioned to arrive at this viewpoint, you need to drive around 2-3 minutes off-road from the main street. The route isn’t extreme – it's quite straightforward, and most jeeps can handle it successfully. If you're in a rented car or prefer a small walk, leave the car and enjoy a 15-minute stroll to the viewpoint. It’s an easy walk, and you can also check out views of the small villages in the surroundings.

The most stunning view is right down the tall cliff, where you’ll see sharp-shaped rocks that are a stunning lava formation of the volcanic land. It’s quite funny seeing a lost goat on those lands, happily enjoying its freedom while locals leave them there the entire day to eat healthy, high-nutrition grass. We met a local who arrived at the same time as us, ready to load his goats into his truck and take them back home. His son was chasing the goats down the cliffs, bringing them together. We had a nice and friendly chat, but honestly, it was in Portuguese that was very hard to understand because of the strong dialect. Anyway, the smile and intentions are all that matter.
