The original church was tragically swept away by a flood in 1558 (Mother Nature does not play!). But in true Madeiran spirit, the current church was built in 1699 and has stood tall ever since. Today, it’s not just a religious gem—it’s a historical monument and a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking beauty, serenity, and a peek into the island’s resilient soul.
