Good To Know
Nestled in the peaceful village of Ribeira da Janela in Porto Moniz, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação has quite the dramatic backstory. The original church was tragically swept away by a flood in 1558 (Mother Nature does not play!). But in true Madeiran spirit, the current church was built in 1699 and has stood tall ever since. Today, it’s not just a religious gem—it’s a historical monument and a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking beauty, serenity, and a peek into the island’s resilient soul.
