Some restaurants try to be subtle.

El Mexicano gave up on that idea years ago.

The moment you walk through the door you're greeted by a towering Native American statue, colourful Mexican decorations, cowboy hats, cacti, sugar skulls, tequila bottles, live music equipment, and enough character to fill three restaurants. Somehow, it all works.

Located on Funchal's Lido promenade with beautiful sea views, El Mexicano has become something of an institution. It's the sort of place where you can enjoy a proper steak while watching the Atlantic, sip a frozen margarita during sunset, and accidentally stay much longer than planned because the karaoke has started.

Despite the name, this isn't just about tacos. The menu combines Mexican classics with South American favourites, juicy grilled steaks, Argentine-style meats, ribs, burgers, fresh fish, seafood, and even plenty of traditional Madeiran dishes. Whether you're craving a sizzling T-Bone, a perfectly grilled espetada, swordfish with banana, or a plate of fajitas, you'll probably leave wondering why you didn't wear stretchier trousers. The restaurant is especially known for its grilled meats cooked over natural charcoal.

One thing we really liked is the atmosphere. During the day it's relaxed enough for families and couples, while in the evening it transforms into a lively venue with karaoke, live music, DJs and plenty of cocktails flowing across the bar. It's dinner... with entertainment included.

If you're staying anywhere around the Lido area and fancy a fun night out with generous portions, colourful surroundings, and sunset views over the ocean, El Mexicano is definitely worth adding to your Madeira food list.
