Ever wanted to drive through a waterfall? Well, Madeira has one. And naturally, it's become an Instagram sensation.
Welcome to Cascata dos Anjos, one of Madeira's most unusual waterfalls, where Mother Nature apparently decided that a perfectly ordinary road needed a shower.
Located near Ponta do Sol, this famous waterfall tumbles down a steep green cliff and splashes directly onto the old coastal road below. No fancy entrance, no artificial effects, just gravity, water and a rather questionable location for a shower.
Over the years, Cascata dos Anjos has become one of the island's most photographed spots. Visitors have posed beneath the falling water, filmed dramatic slow-motion videos and attempted to get the perfect holiday picture without completely soaking their clothes.
But there's a catch. The old road is affected by rockfall hazards and access restrictions. So while the waterfall looks like the ultimate natural car wash, it's definitely not worth ignoring barriers or risking your safety for a photograph.
And besides, Madeira has plenty of other places where you can get wet without worrying about rocks joining the experience.
Good to Know
- 🚶 Visitors frequently approach the waterfall on foot, although official access restrictions remain in place.
- 🚗 The old coastal road is closed to general traffic.
- 💦 Water flow varies depending on recent rainfall.
- ⚠️ Falling rocks are a genuine hazard, so respect barriers and warning signs.
