Bananas. Bananas. BANANAS!
If you thought Madeira's obsession with bananas ended at the supermarket, think again. Someone actually built an entire museum dedicated to them.
And quite frankly, we think that's brilliant.
Welcome to BAM – Madeira Banana Museum, the only place where you can spend an afternoon learning absolutely everything about bananas without anyone questioning your life choices.
Located in Lugar de Baixo, near Ponta do Sol, this wonderfully unusual museum celebrates Madeira's most famous yellow celebrity. And no, we're not talking about a football player with a questionable haircut.
We're talking about the mighty Madeira banana. Small, sweet, delicious and apparently important enough to deserve its own museum. Take that, apples!
Inside, you'll discover interactive exhibitions, holograms, immersive installations and fascinating stories about how bananas became such an important part of Madeira's history and economy. You'll learn how they're grown, transported and eventually delivered into the hands of hungry banana enthusiasts around the world.
And just when you think you've reached peak banana knowledge, the adventure continues outside among real banana plantations, experimental growing fields and clever transportation systems.
Yes, there's actual banana technology. Humanity really is incredible.
But perhaps the greatest scientific achievement awaits at the museum's bar.
Banana beer.
That's right. Someone looked at a banana and thought, “You know what this needs? Alcohol.”
And somehow, they made it happen.
You can also discover banana snacks and treats, because apparently eating a normal banana would be far too predictable at this point.
By the time you leave, you'll know more about bananas than you ever thought possible.
Will this knowledge change your life? Probably not.
Will you ever look at a banana the same way again? Absolutely not.
Why We Love It
🍌 Bananas, Bananas, Everywhere! – Finally, a museum that understands what's truly important in life.
🎨 Surprisingly Interactive – Holograms, immersive installations and creative exhibitions make banana education ridiculously entertaining.
🌴 Real Banana Plantations – Discover how Madeira's famous little bananas grow, from the plant to the bunch.
🚡 Banana Engineering – Learn about clever systems designed to transport bananas. Because even bananas deserve first-class travel.
🍺 Banana Beer – Yes, it exists. Yes, you can try it at the museum bar. And yes, we have questions.
👨👩👧 Fun for the Whole Family – Kids get to explore, adults learn something new, and everyone gets to say “banana” approximately 87 times.
🛍️ Banana Souvenirs – Because nothing says “I've been to Madeira” quite like coming home with banana-themed merchandise.
🏆 A Museum with Serious Appeal – Sorry. We promised ourselves we wouldn't make that joke. We failed.
🌴 Don't Skip the Outdoor Area: The experimental plantations and greenhouses are part of the experience. You'll finally see where all those supermarket bananas begin their careers.
🍺 Our Tip: Leave some time for the BAM Bar. Banana beer and banana chips might just be the most unusual snack combination of your holiday.
📸 Photo Opportunity: Take at least one ridiculous banana-themed picture. This is not optional. Well, technically it is, but we'd be disappointed.
Our verdict?
Some museums are about kings. Others are about wars, paintings or ancient civilisations. Madeira decided to build one about bananas.
And somehow, it makes perfect sense.
We love bananas. Madeira loves bananas. And after visiting BAM, there's a very good chance you'll love bananas even more.
